5 Freshwater Fish You Should Catch in Borneo

Borneo is one of the megabiodiversity islands, one of which is the richness of various types of fish, especially freshwater fish. Some species are the favorite fish to catch because of their large size and agility when pulled with fishing rods. Here are the types of Borneo freshwater monster fish that you should catch in Borneo.

1. Tapah (Wallagonia leerii), The Blood Haus Monster

Tapah belong to catfish  group. The size of the tapah is extraordinary for it family, it can reach the length of the adult human body. Tapah commonly found to have a body length up to more than 1.5 meters and weighs tens of kilograms. This fish can be found in large rivers in Borneo. There are many stories of local people who managed to capture this carnivore. This fish has a very aggressive behavior, even dare to attack humans or anything that bothered him. Fishing this fish is obviously need a heavyweight rod and maximum power, maybe 10 people turn to pull when hook up.
You can find this fish in almost all big river in Borneo.

2. Patin (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)

Patin is known as a consumption fish with a small weight. Most probably only ranges up to 20 kilos. Fishing catfish itself quite fun, but the sensation not realy great, according to the angler. But this assumption vanished when a man from West Kalimantan, managed to catch a Patin. Guess the weighs? 48 pounds! Almost the size of a boy. Same as Tapah, you can find patin fish in almost all big river in Borneo.

3. Snakehead - Toman, Piyang, Cork (Channa spp)


In England, this fish is called Snakehead because of its oval shape and its head resembling a snake's skull. In Indonesia, these fish are also often encountered. There is three common species of snakehead that we can find in Borneo, Gabus, Piyang, and Toman. Toman is the biggest one, it can grow up to 1 meter. Many angler have already caught this predator.
Snake head is very common in Borneo, it found in almost all of freshwater habitat.

4. Masheer (Tor spp)

Masheer fish is nicknamed as King of the River, because of not only wild, but also very agile in swimming and feed on the bait. Maximal length of the fish is 30, cm and the largest weight is reported to reach 5,4 kg. This fish lives in a river of swift currents with clear water. Fish semah is a consumption fish that has a high value. In various regions and customs, masheer fish became the number one fish, not only for the meat, but also because it's habitat in the middle of the forest.
Masheer fish live in faststream freshwater habitat and far from human activity, you need more effort to catch this fish in their natural habitat.

5. Hampala (Hampala bimaculata)

Hampala has amazing stamina and is known as a fighter who does not easily give up. Hampala fish can reach 35 cm in size. Has a strong jaw, a fish with large-sized embellishments and black dots on the side of his body. This fish is able to make hook buck trebel with large size. Although these fish do not have teeth, but a wide open muzzle combined with the strength of the jaw, able to eat large bait.
